Viking shield

Viking shields are held by the handle in the axis of the shield. This hold provides the fighter with high maneuverability and great balance at the same time, as the shield does not tip to the sides and allows the bearer to move the shield very efficiently. No matter whether defending himself or attacking. The hand holding the handle is protected by an iron hand-forged boss.

Description

A precise viking shield made of linden wood produced in two variants:

1) Board shield - shield made of one layer of 1 cm thick linden boards linked together with two transverse pales and a handle. It is most similar to Nordic models.

2) Interaced board shield - the shield is made of two board layers that are oriented perpendicular to each other. This orientation increases the strength of the overall arrangement. The total thickness of the wood is 1 cm.

As standard, the shield is covered on the front side with linen canvas, and with rawhide on the edges. The edges are normally attached with rawhide string (a thin strip of rawhide), but it is possible to attach the edge with artificial sinew, which will raise the appearance of the shield to a next level. The rawhide is natural coloured, but it is possible to stain it with a shade of brown or another color upon agreement.

The linden wood handle is covered with leather for a better grip and beautiful appearance.

The inner side of the shield is impregnated with beeswax, which gives the shield a beautiful shiny surface and an unmistakable scent, but mainly this layer protects it from dirt and water.

The weight of the entire shield is about 4.5 kg with a body diameter of 80 cm and a thickness of 2 mm.

Additional parameters and prices

The price of a standard board shield is CZK 4,000 (3 layers of linen canvas on the front, edges covered with rawhide, linden handle covered with leather, inner side impregnated with beeswax, hand-forged metal boss).

The price of a standard interlaced shield is CZK 6,000 (3 layers of linen canvas on the front, edges covered with rawhide, linden handle covered with leather, inner side impregnated with beeswax, hand-forged metal boss).

It is possible to choose either 2 or 3 mm boss thickness.

The diameter of the shield can be chosen between 60 and 85 cm.

Edge fitting raises the price by CZK 500 (equipping the edges with a 2 mm steel strip, instead of covering the edges with a rawhide strip).

Leather shoulder strap made of quality beef leather with a buckle: CZK 400.

On demand it is possible to equipp the edges with a rope hidden under the rawhide, which will absorb impacts and increase the life of the shield. The cost of this action is CZK 200.

Instead of linen canvas, it is possible to cover the front of the shield with rawhide for increasing the resistance. The price depends on the diameter of the desired shield.

Any further modifications can be agreed upon individually.

Maintenance

Our shields are fully functional combat shields designed for tough clashes. However, since they are made of natural materials (wood, leather), they are not indestructible and require some care. Although the shield is impregnated with wax, it is not completely waterproof. If the shield gets wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature (not quickly, e.g. near a stove or even a campfire). Shields are best stored in a dry environment at approximately room temperature. Rawhide on the front lasts a long time, but it is not bulletproof. If the shield takes a direct hit with a heavy veapon to the center, it is quite possible that the raw material will give way. Such types of attack are rather recommended to be pushed aside. Shields are not built to withstand long-term pressure (e.g. sitting). The metal parts of the shields can start to corrode in a humid environment, so after each battle we recommend treating the metal parts with a suitable agent (silicone oil or any other suitable oil...). We also recommend cleaning the shield from mud and other debris after each battle.

By following these simple principles, we believe that the shield will serve you faithfully and bravely in many battles.

We also offer service for all our shields. But before sending the shield for repair, please contact us first (and ideally send photos of the damage) so that we can make an arrangement.

If there is anything wrong with the shield or if a manufacturing defect occurs during the warranty period, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will do our best to solve it for all of us to be satisfied.
